"Reggae Bloodlines" exhibit displayed in Jamaica at "Pulse" studio
On February 28, Peter was honored in Kingston Jamaica for his over 30 years of documentary the music and culture of Jamaica. The location of the one month exhibition was a trendy gallery/club called PULSE. About 250 folks attended the opening celebration, which was highlighted by an unannounced and greatly appreciated acoustic performance by Toots Hibbert. Peter's son Willie was graciously flown down to the event by VP Records, the most prestigious of all Jamaican record companies. After a five day stay in Kingston, Peter, Willie and two local buddies went to Negril and were hosted by the famous Rock House Hotel, built into the side of the cliffs! It was a great adventure and a commercial success....Jamaica really rolled out the red carpet for Peter, who was the first photographer ever to spread their iconic artists' images to America. EXCITING NEWS ABOUT PETER'S NEW DVD
Peter has been working since last winter to produce a full length DVD (almost three hours!) that celebrates his over 50 years of what he calls "Personalized Photojournalism." It will be released in the Spring. The finishing touches are just being added now. In the meantime, watch the six minute preview of Through The Lens below!
Pete's Latest Picks
2012 has been an active year for Peter, first with travels to California, then settled on the Vineyard for a summer of stunning sunsets, music and politics. Here is a sample of new stuff, with a harbinger of calendar possibilities for 2014! Since these are all "hot off the press," Peter has yet to add them to the photo store, but if you are interested in obtaining any of these, please either email or phone Peter directly. Please click here to view the photos.
NEW FOR OLD
Every once and a while, Peter takes some time to go through old negatives or prints that he never paid much attention to in the past. It's amazing what diamonds in the rough he finds! Peter has posted a handful of these images "from the vault" for your viewing pleasure. Peter has yet to add them to the photo store, but if you are interested in obtaining any of these, please either email or phone Peter directly. Peter's Lecture Series: "Through the Lens"
Peter Simon is now taking bookings for lectures at colleges,
corporations, and various other organizations. "Through
the Lens: A Life Filled with Friendship, History, and
Addiction" (Link: PDF -
144k) is a personal and entertaining journey of
stories and anecdotes, some photographic instruction,
and a very personal account of his own ups and downs.
Peter has recently become more active as a entertaining
and informative lecturer on the college and corporate
circuit. His power point presentation of over 230 images
covers most aspects of a 50 year career as a photojournalist.
He was a major proponent and captured much
of the 60's alternative hippie culture. Many of his images
of the music, celebrities and the lifestyle are iconic.
His subject matter also includes nude beaches, the new
age spiritual scene in the 70's, reggae and Jamaica, baseball
and the New York Mets, the breathtaking beauty of Martha's
Vineyard, and pictures of lifestyles spun out of control
by substance abuse. See Peter's lecture, given to his students at the Simon Gallery last October, online via MVTV.
The SIMON GALLERY is now open daily from 11 to 5.
The Simon Gallery, located at 54 Main Street in Vineyard Haven, now sports a "new look." During the spring, Peter and Ronni basically remodeled the whole space, top to bottom. The result is a much sleeker, cleaner looking gallery. The front of the gallery now features all of Peter's products (books, calendars and portfolios) as well as Ronni's latest jewelry and sculptures. There is also a new "line" of high end, numbered editions of Peter's iconic images, elegantly framed with black matting and a white edge. The knitted goods and yarn now occupies the back of the gallery, along with Peter's more politically oriented work. Please drop by to check in and see all the new creations that are handsomely displayed.
Peter's Photography Workshops
Back in the 80's, Peter taught an annual 6-week
beginner's photo course. It was quite popular and many
requested that the classes return. SO, Peter offered them
again the past summer, and the results proved very successful!
Thus, Peter has scheduled a series of 5 monthly workshops
beginning this May.
You don't need to have fancy equipment or know
all that much about the technical side of photography
in order enjoy Peter's course. Just simple enthusiasm
and a desire to learn is all you need!
Class sizes are limited to twelve students, creating
a more intimate, bonding experience. The "curriculum"
includes an opening night social hour, followed by a course
introduction and a presentation of Peter's popular "Through
The Lens" lecture.
Each subsequent day, students accompany Peter on
field trips, complete various photo assignments, accompanied
with hands-on demonstration of various techniques that
he has developed through the years. Each evening, students
gather at the Simon Gallery in Vineyard Haven to view
and critique each student's output for the day via power
point projection.
During the 4-day workshop, Peter provides continuous
overall and personal instruction, while covering a wide
array of topics such as lighting, composition, group/individual
portraits and posing, capturing the "Decisive Moment"
and how to use flash, depth of field, and action effects
to full advantage. The emphasis is less on highly technical
issues, but more towards the user friendly instruction:
everyday tips to make the casual or professional photographer
more consistent and personally rewarded. Some minor Photoshop
techniques are also offered.
So come along, learn some new or different methods,
or simply re-juice your photo philosophy and creative
energy tanks! Shine a light and capture the moment!
The 4-day seminars cost $600. Read
some of Peter's students testimonials here!
* Due to time constraints and scheduling logistics, Peter is only offering one 4 day seminar this summer. Instead, however, he has decided to conduct intensive 1 day "one on one" highly personalized tutorials. This idea is based upon many such requests he has received. For more information about this new teaching platform, please email Peter here.
